A Healthier You

For the last several weeks, I've been promising you something special in this slot. This is it.

I didn't wish to talk about it until I had some actual physical results for myself, and now I have.

For years, I have been trying to find an effective way to get rid of the excess poundage that starting accumulating on my frame back in 1994. And I'm sure that some of you also have had this same problem.

In younger years, it was a simple matter to shed a few pounds whenever we needed to, quickly and easily. Today, it is another story altogether. No matter what I tried, very little or no success.

But back in December during a visit with my stepson, he told us how he and his brother in Tennessee were losing, effortlessly and pleasantly. And he showed us his obvious results on the spot.

It seems that he had gotten hold of something called UMP, which is an acronym for Ultimate Muscle Protein that he gets from Brian Wiefering, located in Kentucky.

Now, while his brother in Tennessee has been working out while taking the product, James has not, and, as he told me, it is unnecessary to do so unless one wishes to.

Knowing I was going to do some holiday baking last Christmas, I decided to wait until January to begin, which I did.

The first two weeks the scale did not move, and later I found out why ... I had been taking the amount that Brian had recommended for James (who is about 100 pounds heavier than I)!

Also, I found out that I should have been drinking lots and lots of water as well, so I added that.

The third week again did not show any difference on the scale, but that was because I was shedding fat and gaining muscle, which, of course, is heavier. I should have remembered this from about fifteen years ago when I discovered that I tipped the scales at 132, the very same as my very slender, in-shape daughter-in-law. The difference, I learned, was that she exercised a whole lot more and worked out, whereas I did not.

But, the fourth week showed a drop of five pounds, and last week it was three, so I am very encouraged.

This, basically, is the program:

1 — Have 5–6 meals a day, space 2.5 - 3 hours apart.

2 — Try about 30–40 grams of lean protein each meal (lean meats, fish, UMP, egg whites, etc.) Each ounce of lean meat is about 7 grams of protein so that should help you decide how much to eat at each meal.

3 — Include 20 grams of complex, low glycemic carbohydrates with your first four meals (a half cup of oats, a half cup of brown rice, half of a sweet potato, etc.).

4 — Have a little healthy fat with every other meal (handful of almonds, half of a tablespoon of flax oil, etc.)

5 — Eat one cup of green veggies with at least two meals (broccoli, asparagus, celery, dark green lettuce, etc.)

6 — For meals 2, 4, and 6, have a shake using 1-2 scoops of UMP.

If you'd like to find out more about this, Brian has a site at http://wiefit.com. (And no, I do not sell this stuff, nor do I plan to!)

One who knows that enough is enough will always have enough.

What Happens When We Pray

Most of the time, to the human senses, nothing apparently changes during prayer. Yet, that simply is not true. A lot is happening in the unseen and unheard realm.

Although this brief discussion focuses on Christian prayer, it can be modified to apply to any belief system.

There is an old song, "Turn Your Radio On," and that is exactly what happens when a person talks to God (which is one aspect of praying).

Prayer Turns on and Tunes in.

The moment a person turns a radio on (prays), the radio taps into the frequency to which it is tuned, and the broadcast station is heard over the air waves by the person who has just tuned in (the pray-er). The human eye sees nothing, but because the radio is tuned in to a station that is sending out signals, the human ear hears the voices or sounds.

Realize that the most powerful forces in the universe are invisible to the human eye: electricity, sound, wind, gravity, taste, smell, reason, logic, emotions, feelings, will, laughter, etc.

And still another list can be compiled for things that are normally inaudible to the average human ear: those plug-in devices that emit a high-pitched noise that scares bugs away, bats, LEDs (such as when an electric razor is charging), surge protectors, and AC adapters that plug into the wall, to name a few.

Prayer in the Receiving Mode

And then there is the human conscience. Dictionary.com defines the conscience primarily as "The awareness of a moral or ethical aspect to one's conduct together with the urge to prefer right over wrong." It can neither be seen with the eyes nor be heard with the ears. It must be discerned with the heart—the innermost core of a person. It is with the heart that the other side of prayer happens, in the receiving mode, and that is listening to God.

As with everything else in the universe, in prayer there is a positive (talking) and a negative (listening). But, as stated above, listening with the heart, rather than with the ears, is what has to happen for effective two-way communication with God.

Prayer Akin to Quantum Mechanics

Physicists have proven beyond any doubt that our physical world (the one we experience with our senses) is like a large ocean of energy that repeatedly blinks into and out of existence as quickly as the blink of an eye. The conclusion is that the things that appear to be solid are just not so. And that is what is called Quantum Physics.

Furthermore, these physicists have proven that thoughts are what construct and hold together the seemingly solid objects all around us! As Niels Bohr said, "Anyone who is not shocked by quantum theory has not understood it."

It becomes quite evident, therefore, that praying works in the realm of the quantum. But "setting the stage" with sound waves of the right music and pleasant, relaxing lighting allows things to flow. However, trying to force something to happen will almost guarantee that it will not.

No, the byword is to "let go and let God." It is a form of release to "cast your cares upon Him," because the person who is praying does not bring things into fruition. That's God's job, as long as the pray-er is believing and not allowing doubt to creep in.

Prayer Energizes and Organizes the Spoken Word.

So, as an integral part of prayer, whether it is for healing or for salvation, one must always call things that are not (or appear as if they are not) as if they were. Conversely, one should NEVER call things that are as if they are not. There is no place in the Bible that says to do that. And to do so is a denial of fact. But from the creation, God SPOKE things into existence. He did not THINK them into existence.

There is something about the spoken word that energizes things, because speech generates vibrations in the ether akin to radio frequencies.

But praying in Jesus' Name, I believe, sends the spoken word directly to God, who organizes those vibrations into visual manifestation.

And, in addition to that, if the words are spoken with passion—fervently, as the Bible states, results will manifest much more quickly!

Today's English Lesson

Seeing the same elementary mistakes over and over again has prompted this publisher to write an English lesson each issue. Look for some of these lessons to be repeated, because the mistakes are!

"Exalt" means to raise in rank, honor, power, character, quality, etc. It means to elevate, as in "He was exalted to the position of president." It also means to praise, to extol, to promote, dignify, raise, ennoble, or glorify.

"Exult" means to show or feel a lively or triumphant joy, to rejoice exceedingly, or to be highly elated or jubilant, as in: "They exulted over their victory." It means to delight, glory, or revel in.

I'm sharing this with you, because I had always thought the two words were the same in meaning with only a slight difference in spelling. So maybe you've also learned something today! :-)

Air Tran Flight 297 Incident
by Chaplain Keith A. Robinson

Air Tran Airways Flight 297 was scheduled to leave Atlanta at 4:43pm in route to Houston Hobby Airport. Because of my position as Corps Commander of the Houston Regional Community Chaplain Corps, I frequently wear my Chaplain jacket as I travel. Like some sort of heavenly magnet, the Chaplain jacket invites discussion with a wide variety of people, who are struggling with issues in need of a comforting ear. My connecting flight was late, and the door to the jet way closed prior to my boarding. So, even though I was rescheduled on a much later flight far from C16, I settled down with a newspaper and only a quarter of my remaining cell phone battery.

While waiting at the distant gate, I noticed on the scheduling monitors that Flight 297 had returned to gate C16 and was scheduled to leave at 5:45pm. I hurried back to gate C16 in hopes of boarding my original flight after it strangely returned to the gate.

Upon arriving at the gate, I noticed that there was a look of solemn concern on the faces of the gate attendants. I asked if I could get on flight 297 when they returned to the gate. Their faces indicated a distinct level of stress that let everyone in the seating area know that there was a problem onboard. When I approached them a few moments later I said, I am a Chaplain. Is there some way that I can be of help? They said no. Obviously, an event had occurred that they would not talk about.

Over the next thirty minutes, officials from Air Tran started arriving at the gate, flashing their badges and going down to the plane. After 6-7 officials exited the door, suddenly it flew open, and 12-15 people from the flight hurried off the plane. Anger and fear was etched on their faces as they jerked their carry-ons and tore into their computer bags to schedule another flight out of Atlanta.

One gentleman confronted the gate agent demanding his luggage be removed from the flight. As I spoke to him, he related that when Flight 297 left the concourse the first time, it began taxiing to take off when approximately 12 men of Middle Eastern appearance stood up and began dancing and singing in an Arabic dialect. They refused to be seated when directed to do so by the flight attendants. Then the singing stopped, and some of the men took out their cell phones and began taking pictures of the other individual passengers.

Again, the men were ordered to be seated by the flight crew and refused, while continuing to take their pictures. Next, the de-boarded passenger related that a few of the men gestured with imaginary guns as their fingers, indicating with their triggering action that they would shoot the people on the plane.

The flight crew declared an emergency, and the plane returned to the concourse. The 12 men were taken to another area of the airport and questioned. It is my understanding that their luggage was removed and checked. Then ten of the men were allowed to get back on the plane. That's when the 12-15 passengers decided that they wanted to get off that plane and take other flights. This ordeal had gone on approximately two hours to this point.

With much concern, I was allowed to go down the jet way to the plane. There I encountered a man claiming that he was from Homeland Security to assess the situation. I related to the Homeland Security man about the claims of the photos and the shooting hand gestures related by the first man to exit the plane, and I told him that I was a Senior Chaplain familiar with Critical Incident Response and would wait to help him, should the passengers need my help. He said, "Thanks."

The flight crew hurriedly walked past me, leaving the plane with their baggage. The flight attendants were emotionally shaken, red faced, in tears, and were sobbing. A new flight crew was ordered for the flight. All remaining passengers awaited their next crew, unsure of the ultimate destiny of this flight.

When I boarded the plane, the air was tense and filled with emotion. Many of the passengers were obviously upset and at wit's end. Often passengers would look back then forward to assess any change in the suspicious activities of the ten hostile Middle Eastern passengers.

Although my seat was 22D, I moved to the back of the plane to gain a better view of any actions that might take place in front of me. Some of the Middle Eastern men were in the business class area, and the remainder were seated in the back of the plane. They spoke only Arabic, and I did not understand what they were saying, although a strange burst of laughter would erupt as they spoke.

I struggled to see if these men were merely tragically toying with the emotions of the other American passengers or if they intended to do more. I calmed the new flight attendants and told them where I would be seated if they or any of the other passengers needed me.

I asked the flight attendant if she did or did not know whether we had an air marshal on the plane. She said that they were never told when one was on board. I prayed for the peace to handle whatever might happen on the flight but kept my eyes peeled forward for any suspicious movements.

One of the other passengers in mid-plane grew restless and began to show signs of rising agitation. He got up from his chair, looked back and then to the front of the plane, and paced back and forth between three to four rows. I prayed that he would not become violent with some of the men, but then he quickly sat down and remained quiet until the end of the flight.

One hour into the flight, thankfully nothing had happened. The outer skin of Flight 297's body must have radiated with prayers ascending into heaven from the passengers—and the one chaplain at the back of the plane. Each of the Middle Eastern men remained quiet but frequently went into the overhead compartments to retrieve what appeared to be electronic devices and other packages from their backpacks. I was thankful when the men in the back of the plane appeared to nod off into a harmless sleep.

One of the ten men from business class came back to retrieve a box marked as a Mac Notebook. He brought it to the front of the plane and put it in the third compartment on the left of the plane. There must have been four or five airline pilots in uniform onboard making connecting flights through Hobby Airport in Houston. One of the pilot passengers moved the Mac Notebook box to another overhead area without anyone observing the new distant hiding place for his package.

Finally, the pilot announced that we were only 285 miles from Houston and under an hour of time to go. Still nothing happened. The flight attendants appeared to be calming down, but the heads of passengers periodically bobbed forward and back, still watching for activity from the men.

Obviously, in Atlanta, the officials from Air Tran had been placed in a difficult ethnic position that directly resulted from the inappropriate, threatening actions of these 12 Middle Eastern men. And, obviously vacillating between appropriately removing these men permanently off the plane and sequestering them for the threats they made toward these passengers on the flight, or taking the "politically correct" action of taking them off, questioning them, and then putting most of them back on the plane, Air Tran took the easy way out and put most of them back onboard.

As in most dilemma situations, both parties are never equally affected by the resulting action. By putting ten of the men back on the plane, Air Tran decided that it was better to emotionally traumatize each and every one of the remaining passengers on Air Tran Flight 297 for the remainder of the flight. They had a chance to remove the offenders, but didn't.

Only a few weeks before this flight experience, one Middle Eastern man had killed many soldiers in the name of Allah at Fort Hood, Texas. This experience placed many in America into a 9-11 state of mental preparedness. Most of us realize that there are pockets of radical Islamists right here in America awaiting either an internal or external signal to strike again at Americans—just as they did on 9-11. The realities of these events can't help but condition our minds for protection.

As a chaplain I ask myself, would America have been better off if a group of passengers on Air Tran Flight 297 assumed the 9-11 mentality of preparedness and launched a group attack on these men, forcing them into their seats until the plane parked again in its Atlanta International jet way? Were the passengers right to just put up with the obvious intimidation by these men until the flight was over? And, could it be that we actually endorsed the actions of these men by not taking action against them when they made their first imaginary shooting action toward an American on that flight?

How many times will it take for Americans forcefully to stand up for their safety, based solely on the aggressive and threatening actions of these men as people threatening Americans, for them to see that Americans won't tolerate physical or psychological intimidation at all anymore?

Is it inappropriate for Americans to stand together, draw a line in the sand, and say this will not happen to me or any of my American brothers/sisters? Do we not have a duty and responsibility to stand against this type of intimidation?

And this is the most difficult question of all: For those who were passengers that evening on Air Train Flight 297, could it be that we actually planted the seeds for the next intimidation by those who would attack us in our own homeland by not acting together to stop the intimidation and threats?

As long as there are those who would claim Jihad as the proper way to solve ideological differences between religions, countries, and civilizations, intimidation and threats will continue to be the initial instruments of force used against peace-loving people. As we become sensitized to the successive intimidation and threats, we will become less and less responsive in our own defense. Then, as we find ourselves lulled into believing that the next intimidation or threat is just that—it will be an actual attack on America. We will not have learned from the deaths of all those Americans who died at the Twin Towers in New York or at the Pentagon in Washington, DC.

Even peace loving Americans must awaken to the reality that our enemies intend to wipe us from the face of the earth through Jihad. Intimidation and threats are merely the precursors to the violence which will come. Ideally, all mankind should respect the beliefs, customs, and religions of others on this earth. And God knows that someday we may actually reach that point. But, until that time, America must set boundaries that protect its people, based upon what is right or wrong for America and its people.

In order to survive as a nation of people claiming American values and ethics, we must stop political correctness as a way to temporarily appease those who would kill us in a heartbeat. It's time we deal in reality and speak honestly and accurately about the facts in each situation. Face it: you cannot prevent someone from getting their feelings hurt when you speak the truth.

If America is to survive, and I pray to God that it does, we must enforce boundaries that define us as Americans. If we don't enforce American values and just bend the truth to make people feel good, very soon America will become impotent before the world.

I believe that God didn't make a mistake when he brought together the forefathers of America. These men were tested, and from the fire of the American Revolution a new country was born. Today we can perpetuate our America or we can remember it as a distant dream that didn't last.

I, for one, believe that God did not make America as a mistake. And, from that belief in America, the truth must be spoken as it is in reality. When intimidation or threats confront an American citizen or an American ideal, we must stand together and hold the boundary set by our American forefathers. In truth, words mean very little. How we act reveals what we really believe.

The Cab Ride
by Kent Nerburn

Twenty years ago, I drove a cab for a living. It was a cowboy's life, a life for someone who wanted no boss. What I didn't realize was that it was also a ministry. Because I drove the night shift, my cab became a moving confessional. Passengers climbed in, sat behind me in total anonymity, and told me about their lives. I encountered people whose lives amazed me, ennobled me, made me laugh and weep.

But none touched me more than a woman I picked up late one August night.

I was responding to a call from a small brick fourplex in a quiet part of town. I assumed I was being sent to pick up some partiers,or someone who had just had a fight with a lover, or a worker heading to an early shift at some factory for the industrial part of town.

When I arrived at 2:30 am, the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window. Under these circumstances, many drivers would just honk once or twice, wait a minute, then drive away. But I had seen too many impoverished people who depended on taxis as their only means of transportation. Unless a situation smelled of danger, I always went to the door. This passenger might be someone who needs my assistance, I reasoned to myself. So I walked to the door and knocked.

"Just a minute," answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor. After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 80s stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940s movie. By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets. There were no clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware.

"Would you carry my bag out to the car?" she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman. She took my arm, and we walked slowly toward the curb. She kept thanking me for my kindness.

"It's nothing," I told her. "I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated." "Oh, you're such a good boy", she said. When we got in the cab, she gave me and address, then asked, "Could you drive through downtown?"

"It's not the shortest way," I answered quickly. "Oh, I don't mind," she said. "I'm in no hurry. I'm on my way to a hospice."

I looked in the rearview mirror. Her eyes were glistening. "I don't have any family left," she continued. "The doctor says I don't have very long."

I quietly reached over and shut off the meter. "What route would you like me to take?" I asked.

For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator. We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds. She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl. Sometimes she'd ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.

As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, "I'm tired. Let's go now."

We drove in silence to the address she had given me. It was a low building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed under a portico. Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were solicitous and intent, watching her every move. They must have been expecting her.

I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman was already seated in a wheelchair. "How much do I owe you?" she asked, reaching into her purse.

"Nothing," I said.

"You have to make a living," she answered.

"There are other passengers," I responded. Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly. "You gave an old woman a little moment of joy," she said.

"Thank you." I squeezed her hand, then walked into the dim morning light. Behind me, a door shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life.

I didn't pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly, lost in thought. For the rest of that day, I could hardly talk. What if that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift? What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away? On a quick review, I don't think that I have done anything more important in my life. We're conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments. But great moments often catch us unaware—beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one.

People may not remember exactly what you did, or what you said, but they will always remember how you made them feel.
