Greetings, one and all! This is the very first issue of the new year—and it also marks the beginning of the tenth year of 'elf Expressions Ezine!

Looking back at the archives, the ezine has evolved from some, by comparison, pretty crude beginnings, but time and experience seem to have improved its lot, at least I hope that is the case. As always, of course, I am open to suggestions for improvement and also for features that you readers might like to see incorporated, so fire away! Email me at elfbutter@sbcglobal.net.

Meanwhile, I hope that you enjoy this issue. :-)

A Healthier You

If you're like I am, you suffer from dry skin brought on by lack of humidity, and this year is no exception.

But help is on the way!

First, get rid of all those dead skin cells residing on the epidermis by scrubbing them off with sea salt. One caveat: Use Celtic sea salt, which is full of lots of good minerals, so as you remove the old layer of skin, you are actually adding those minerals—and potassium—to your body.

Realize that anything that you put on your skin gets absorbed into your system just the same as if you had ingested it. Don't believe that? Try crushing a clove of fresh garlic on the bottom of your bare foot, and see if you don't taste it in your mouth very shortly, at least within thirty minutes, maybe sooner.

To get the sea salt to do its thing, mix it with olive oil or liquid glycerin. You can even add some essential oil to enrich the experience. Just make a paste from combining these ingredients, thick enough so that it will adhere to your skin somewhat and not be lumpy. (Also, be sure to use only the fine grain salt on your face, but the other varieties of Celtic sea salt are fine for the "tougher" skin areas.)

The salt acts as a sort of sandpaper to smooth the skin and leave it glowing.

Rinse all the areas your have scrubbed with pure, warm water and pat almost dry before finishing with a good moisturizing cream or lotion.

The answer to each of the above is the same: Muslim male extremists mostly between the ages of 17 and 40.

No, I really don't see a pattern here to justify profiling, do you? So, to ensure we Americans never offend anyone, particularly fanatics intent on killing us, airport security screeners will no longer be allowed to profile certain people. They must conduct random searches of 80-year-old women, little kids, airline pilots with proper identification, members of the President's security detail, 85-year-old Congressmen with metal hips, and Medal of Honor winner and former Governor Joe Foss, but leave Muslim males between the ages 17 and 40 alone, lest they cry profiling.

Let's send this to as many people as we can so that the ACLU and other dunder-headed attorneys along with Federal Justices, who want to thwart common sense, feel ashamed of themselves—if they have any such sense.

As the writer of the award winning story "Forrest Gump" so aptly put it, "Stupid is as stupid does."

Applying for a Job

A man was applying for a job as a prison guard. The warden said, "Now these are real tough guys in here. Do you think you can handle it?"

"No problem," the applicant replied, "If they don't behave, out they go!"

Today's English Lesson

Seeing the same elementary mistakes over and over again has prompted this publisher to write an English lesson each issue. Look for some of these lessons to be repeated, because the mistakes are!

Once again, I'm totally blown away at the ignorance of web writers. What I am seeing all over is people using apostrophes in the most weird ways! For instance, I see "ads" written as "ad's" when no possessive is involved. And today ... God help this person ... I actually saw "doe's" and "goe's"! Is that unbelievable, or what?

Of course, we see ignoramuses use it's all the time, when they really mean its. And it's all so very simple. "It's" is merely a contraction of "it is." "Its" is a pronoun, similar to "his" or "hers," only neuter in gender.

The other issue I'd like to cover today is the fact that these very same people don't even bother to run their text through a basic spell checker. There really is no excuse for this. It just pure laziness! It takes only a minute to go over your text.

212°—The Extra Degree Gift Book
by S. L. Parker, Mac Anderson

212° — the extra degree captures the essence of excellence in an unforgettable way ... At 211 degrees, water is hot. At 212 degrees, it boils. And with boiling water comes steam. And steam can power a locomotive. The one extra degree makes the difference.

A Little More Effort—A Lot More Results

Think you have to make huge changes and expend a ton of extra energy to achieve bigger and better results? Think again! And consider this...

At 211 degrees, water is hot. At 212 degrees, it boils. And with boiling water comes steam. And with steam, you can power a train. Applying just one extra degree of temperature to water means the difference between something that is simply very hot and something that generates enough force to power a large machine. The message of this simple yet powerful metaphor should be clear to all:

Seemingly small things can make tremendous differences. The key to learning is equally powerful: The application of additional heat (effort) to whatever you undertake will not only help you achieve the primary objective you seek, but also reap exponential rewards that are possible by applying one extra degree of effort.

Imagine the possibilities...

Add just a few hours each month to your professional development outside of work, and you will have invested the equivalent of a full work week.

Make just one extra contact each day ... a sales call ... a customer ... a brief discussion with a colleague ... an encouraging talk with a member of your team. With contact comes opportunity. At the end of the year you'll have opened more than 200 additional doors of possibility.

Eliminate one half hour of television watching each day, and you'll gain 182.5 hours each year to use elsewhere (equivalent to four and a half weeks of work).

Imagine YOUR possibilities. Where can you give a little more effort? What small changes can you make that will add up over time? As a leader, what can you do—what will you do—to enjoy the rewards that come from "turning up the heat" one extra degree? Find those opportunities ... and seize them!

The Rose
Author unknown

John Blanchard stood up from the bench, straightened his Army uniform, and studied the crowd of people making their way through Grand Central Station. He looked for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn't, the girl with the rose.

His interest in her had begun thirteen months before in a Florida library. Taking a book off the shelf he found himself intrigued, not with the words of the book, but with the notes penciled in the margin. The soft handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and insightful mind. In the front of the book, he discovered the previous owner's name, Miss Hollis Maynell.

With time and effort he located her address. She lived in New York City. He wrote her a letter introducing himself and inviting her to correspond. The next day he was shipped overseas for service in World War II. During the next year and one month the two grew to know each other through the mail.

Each letter was a seed falling on a fertile heart. A romance was budding. Blanchard requested a photograph, but she refused. She felt that if he really cared, it wouldn't matter what she looked like.

When the day finally came for him to return from Europe, they scheduled their first meeting —7:00pm at the Grand Central Station in New York. "You'll recognize me," she wrote, "by the red rose I'll be wearing on my lapel." So at 7:00 he was in the station looking for a girl whose heart he loved, but whose face he'd never seen. I'll let Mr. Blanchard tell you what happened:

A young woman was coming toward me, her figure long and slim. Her blonde hair lay back in curls from her delicate ears; her eyes were blue as flowers. Her lips and chin had a gentle firmness, and in her pale green suit she was like springtime come alive. I started toward her, entirely forgetting to notice that she was not wearing a rose. As I moved, a small, provocative smile curved her lips. "Going my way, sailor?" she murmured.

Almost uncontrollably I made one step closer to her, and then I saw Hollis Maynell. She was standing almost directly behind the girl. A woman well past 40, she had graying hair tucked under a worn hat. She was more than plump, her thick-ankled feet thrust into low-heeled shoes.

The girl in the green suit was walking quickly away. I felt as though I was split in two, so keen was my desire to follow her, and yet so deep was my longing for the woman whose spirit had truly companioned me and upheld my own. And there she stood. Her pale, plump face was gentle and sensible, her gray eyes had a warm and kindly twinkle.

I did not hesitate. My fingers gripped the small worn blue leather copy of the book that was to identify me to her. This would not be love, but it would be something precious, something perhaps even better than love, a friendship for which I had been and must ever be grateful.

I squared my shoulders and saluted and held out the book to the woman, even though while I spoke I felt choked by the bitterness of my disappointment. "I'm Lieutenant John Blanchard, and you must be Miss Maynell. I am so glad you could meet me; may I take you to dinner?"

The woman's face broadened into a tolerant smile. "I don't know what this is about, son," she answered, "but the young lady in the green suit who just went by, she begged me to wear this rose on my coat. And she said if you were to ask me out to dinner, I should go and tell you that she is waiting for you in the big restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of test!"

It's not difficult to understand and admire Miss Maynell's wisdom. The true nature of a heart is seen in its response to the unattractive.

"Tell me whom you love," Houssaye wrote, "And I will tell you who you are..."
