A Healthier You

Today's tip is simple: Eat real food! Now you may think this would be obvious, but even casual observation reveals that, at least in the U.S., the population is increasingly sick and obese, as a result of ingesting non-foods that either are imitations or chemicalized to the point that the food values are no longer present.

God gave us all the food we need to keep us healthy. The trouble is that corporate greed has undermined the ready availability and quality of much of it.

When you find something that mimics butter, for instance, do not take it home! Butter is the real thing, and health authorities now agree that it is much better for you than cheap alternatives.

Yogurt is a health food ... until it is bastardized with sweeteners and other additives.

Raw milk is healthy; commercialized milk is not.

Real cheese is wonderful; cheese "products" are detrimental.

This list could get very long, but you get the idea. Your health is your responsibility, and part of that responsibility is to find out what is in the food you are putting into your body.

Doing so could be the best thing you can do for you and your family in 2012.

Change or Die

Today, as every day, your life and mine seems to be frittered away in endless details, tasks, and busy work.

Life creeps up on us inevitably before we can even get started on our glorious plans to work toward our life's goals.

I mean, someone has to tend to all these mundane things, right? Someone has to handle all the paperwork that goes with living in our modern world. Someone has to take care of all the "things" we've managed to accumulate thus far while we work toward accumulating even more, right?

All of this can leave us feeling quite helpless, drowning actually, in a sea of "things to do" and no time left to do those things that we wish to do.

Is anyone relating to this?

Thought so.

Is there a solution?

Think so.

Just rearrange your priorities.

Sounds simple, I know.

And, of course, it's simple to say and hear but much harder to do.

Why? Simply because it requires a change of mind, a breaking out of acquired habit, and that requires discipline ... a "bad" word.

Even though we would die without change, we resist it with every fiber of our beings. We do not like to change our habits, our routine. We like to do only those things that are "comfortable," the things that we can do easily and quickly, because we are used to them.

So you need to determine what you "should" be doing first thing every day when you get down to your business—that is, after you have all the personal grooming, etc. out of the way. And I would bet that you know exactly what that is. If you don't, you absolutely must discover what it is.

Make yourself do it. Force yourself. Everyone knows that it takes twenty-one days to establish a new habit, and during that three-week period you will have to force yourself. Be strict with yourself. Be demanding. Push yourself.

It's going to be work ... you know it is. But you have to look ahead and keep your eye on the prize, not the process. On the end, and not the means. On the solution, and not the problem.

You're probably wondering how you ever could conjure up enough fortitude to discipline yourself this way. You have to change your attitude and your thoughts about what you will be doing. At first, you may dread doing it. So what? No one's asking you to walk on water. Get over it!

If you force yourself to just do it by first thinking you can and then taking whatever physical steps are necessary to start the mental processes, things will fall into place.

Want an example? Okay. Say you have just joined a new program that requires you to contact people by phone to invite them to a call or whatever.

You make every excuse in the world not to pick up that telephone. You have to finish this, that, and the other thing. You have to start this, that, and the other. Then that heavyweight rings, and you are relieved for a few minutes' respite. It's easy to pick up then. The doorbell rings. Another respite. Maybe you'd better get your desk organized so that this new neatness will somehow transfer to your prospect. And on and on it goes until you find you've frittered away the time that you could have made some headway.

So pick up the phone, dial, and make a new friend.

If any of this sounds familiar to you, then you're the one I'm writing to. It's like learning to swim when you're afraid of water, when you gingerly stick your toe in to check the water temperature and gradually get used to it. It's easier just to jump in from where you stand and get wet all at once. Yes, you may flail around and get some water in your nose, but you'll gain confidence each time you do it, and one of these days you'll swim away with your new-found ability to propel yourself through the water with the best of 'em!

Change yourself—or your dreams will die!

Today's English Lesson

Seeing the same elementary mistakes over and over again has prompted this publisher to write an English lesson each issue. Look for some of these lessons to be repeated, because the mistakes are!

Just when I think I have run out of "new" material for this slot, another misusage rears its ugly head.

The other day I was reading something somewhere—can't for the life of me remember where—but the user was talking about his cleft "pallet"! Of course, this should have been "palate."

I'm sure, if the writer owned a "pallet," which, in its most common modern usage, is a short wooden platform, he wouldn't have been able to get it in his mouth!

Then, too, I hope you never make the mistake of using "palette" for either of the above, as that term refers only to the hand-held board used by an artist to mix paint, or the set of colors put on the palette.

In a recent email, I read about a woman named Pam, who knows the pain of considering abortion.

More than 24 years ago, she and her husband, Bob, were serving as missionaries to the Philippines and praying for a fifth child. Pam contracted amoebic dysentery, an infection of the intestine caused by a parasite found in contaminated food or drink. She went into a coma and was treated with strong antibiotics before they discovered she was pregnant.

Doctors urged her to abort the baby for her own safety and told her that the medicines had caused irreversible damage to her baby. She refused the abortion and cited her Christian faith as the reason for her hope that her son would be born without the devastating disabilities physicians predicted.

Pam said the doctors didn't think of it as a life; they thought of it as amass of fetal tissue.

While pregnant, Pam nearly lost their baby four times but refused to consider abortion. She recalled making a pledge to God with her husband: If you will give us a son, we'll name him Timothy and we'll make him a preacher.

Pam ultimately spent the last two months of her pregnancy in bed and eventually gave birth to a healthy baby boy August 14, 1987. Pam's youngest son is indeed a preacher. He preaches in prisons, makes hospital visits, and serves with his father's ministry in the Philippines. He also plays football. Pam's son is Tim Tebow.

The University of Florida's star quarterback became the first sophomore in history to win college football's highest award, the Heisman Trophy. His current role as quarterback of the Denver Broncos has provided an incredible platform for Christian witness. As a result, he is being called The Mile-High Messiah.

Tim's fame and the family's inspiring story have given Pam numerous opportunities to speak on behalf of women's centers across the country. Pam Tebow believes that every little baby you save matters. I pray her tribe will increase!

The 3 Stumbling Blocks Of Memory Improvement
by Nishant Kasibhatla

Do you have a good memory? Can you remember any information fast? Can you recall information whenever you want? If your answer for the above questions is "no" or "sometimes," then you need to know about the three stumbling blocks of memory improvement. Just the awareness of these blocks would also help you in a great way. So what are these blocks?

1 — Disbelief

Most people have an "amazing level" of disbelief on their memory capacity that they don't even try to memorize new information.

If I write a 50-digit number and ask anyone to memorize it, I usually get some great answers like:

"You mean the whole 50 digit number?" or "I think I will never be able to do it" or "Come again. Memorize what?" or "It will take a year for me," etc.

Well, I do not find fault with any of the above responses. But what is interesting to note is that no one wants even to try it. What causes such disbelief in people in their memory power? The simple answer is "lack of awareness."

Your brain is the most amazing machine on the planet. If you train your brain, nothing is impossible. Make sure you give your memory its true value.

Many people brag about their memory, but don't do anything to make it good. You just can't wish to improve your memory. You need to act. You have to give your memory a good workout.

The next time you want to memorise anything, just make a committed effort to memorize it. Believe that you can do it. You will be surprised with the result.

2 — Disinterest

You know that interest plays a vital role in the process of memory. If you have to memorise any information, you have to be interested in it!

If you aren't, then it will be difficult to memorize it. Trying to memorize information without getting interested in it is a great way to waste your precious time.

Try to find out ways and means of making the information fun to learn. Try to find an expert on that information, and discuss the topic with him. The expert can explain the same information in a way you could never think of. Well, that's why he is an expert!

Remember this: If the information is not interesting enough, it's your duty to make sure it is interesting.

3 — Disuse

The fastest way to forget information is to not use it in your day-to-day life. Research indicates that people forget about 80% of the new information they learn in as few as 24 hours. Unbelievable, isn't it? To stop this loss of information, you have use the information you learn as much as possible.

Some ideas are:

1 — Teach the information to someone else.
2 — Discuss the points with your peers.
3 — Write a summary in your own words.
4 — Write an article about it!
5 — Think how can you teach it to any 5 years old kid.

Memory improvement is not possible unless you kick the three stumbling blocks out of your way. Eliminating these blocks early on in the process of memorizing can save you a mighty amount of time and mental energy.

Coming out of the traps of disbelief, disinterest, and disuse is your first step to memory improvement. It's easy—if only you take action.

The Plum Pretty Sister

Justin was a climber. By one and a half, he had discovered the purple plum tree in the backyard and its friendly branches became his favorite hangout.

At first, he would climb just a few feet and make himself comfortable in the curve where the trunk met the branches. Soon he was building himself a small fort and dragging his toy tractors and trucks up to their new garage.

One day when he was two, Justin was playing in the tree as usual. I turned my back to prune the rosebush, and he disappeared.

"Justin, where are you?" I hollered.

His tiny voice called back, "Up here, Mommy, picking all the plums for you!"

I looked up in horror and disbelief. There was Justin on the roof of the house, filling his plastic bucket with the ripe juicy plums from his favorite tree.

When Justin was three, I became pregnant. My husband and I explained to him that we were going to have another baby as a playmate for him.

He was very excited, kissed my tummy and said, "Hello, baby, I'm your big brother, Justin."

From the beginning, he was sure he was going to have a little sister, and every day, he'd beg to know if she was ready to play yet. When I explained that the baby wasn't arriving until the end of June, he seemed confused.

One day he asked, "When is June, Mommy?"

I realized I needed a better explanation. How could a three-year-old know what "June" meant? Just then, as Justin climbed into the low branches of the plum tree, he gave me the answer I was looking for, his special tree.

"Justin, the baby is going to be born when the plums are ripe. You can keep me posted when that will be, okay?" I wasn't completely sure if I was on target, but the gardener in me was confident I'd be close enough.

Oh, he was excited! Now Justin had a way to know when his new baby sister would come to play. From that moment on, he checked the old plum tree several times a day and reported his findings to me. Of course, he was quite concerned in November when all the leaves fell off the tree. By January, with the cold and the rains, he was truly worried whether his baby would be cold and wet like his tree. He whispered to my tummy that the tree was strong and that she (the baby) had to be strong too, and make it through the winter.

By February, a few purple leaves began to shoot forth and his excitement couldn't be contained.

"My tree is growing, Mommy! Pretty soon, she'll have baby plums, and then I'll have my baby sister."

March brought the plum's beautiful tiny white flowers, and Justin was overjoyed.

"She's b'ooming, Mommy!" he chattered, struggling with the word "blooming." He rushed to kiss my tummy and got kicked in the mouth.

"The baby's moving, Mommy. She's b'ooming, too. I think she wants to come out and see the flowers.."

So, it went for the next couple of months, as Justin checked every detail of his precious plum tree and reported to me about the flowers turning to tiny beads that would become plums.

The rebirth of his tree gave me ample opportunity to explain the development of the fetus that was growing inside me. Sometimes I think he believed I had actually planted a "baby seed" inside my tummy, because when I drank water, he'd say things like, "You're watering our little flower, Mommy!" I'd laugh and once again explain in simple terms the story of the birds and the bees, the plants and the trees.

June finally arrived, and so did the purple plums. At first, they were fairly small, but Justin climbed his tree anyway to pick some plums off the branches where the sun shone warmest. He brought them to me to let me know the baby wasn't ripe yet.

I felt ripe; I was ready to pop! When were the plums going to start falling from that darn tree? Justin would rub my tummy and talk to his baby sister, telling her she had to wait a little longer because the fruit was not ready to be picked yet.

His forays into the plum tree lasted longer each day, as if he was coaxing the tree to ripen quickly. He talked to the tree and thanked it for letting him know about this important event in his life. Then one day, it happened. Justin came running into the house, his eyes as big as saucers, with a plastic bucket full to the brim of juicy purple plums.

"Hurry, Mommy, hurry!" he shouted. "She's coming, she's coming! The plums are ripe, the plums are ripe!"

I laughed uncontrollably as Justin stared at my stomach, as if he expected to see his baby sister erupt any moment. That morning I did feel a bit queasy, and it wasn't because I had a dental appointment.

Before we left the house, Justin went out to hug his plum tree and whisper that today was the day his "plum pretty sister" would arrive. He was certain. As I sat in the dental chair, the labor pains began, just as Justin had predicted.. Our "plum" baby was coming! I called my parents, and my husband rushed me to the hospital. At 6:03 p.m. on June 22, the day that will forever live in family fame as "Plum Pretty Sister Day," our daughter was born. We didn't name her Purple Plum as Justin suggested, but chose another favorite flower, Heather.

At Heather's homecoming, Justin kissed his new playmate and presented her with his plastic bucket, full to the brim with sweet, ripe, purple plums. "These are for you," he said proudly.

Justin and Heather are now teenagers, and the plum tree has become our bonding symbol. Although we moved from the home that housed Justin's favorite plum tree, the first tree to be planted in our new yard was a purple plum, so Justin and Heather could know when to expect her special day. Throughout their growing-up years, the children spent countless hours nestled in the branches, counting down the days through the birth of leaves, flowers, buds and fruit. Our birthday parties are always festooned with plum branches and baskets brimming with freshly picked purple plums.

Because as Mother Nature and Justin, would have it, for the last fifteen years, the purple plum has ripened exactly on June 22.
