HIGH ANTIOXIDANT FOODS

As promised, I've temporarily suspended publishing personal testimonies in this slot to include a few excerpts from the amazing book that started it all, "Lessons From the Miracle Doctors," by Jon Barron.

"Certain foods are high in antioxidants and should be a regular part of the diet. In fat, the US Department of Agriculture recently rated a large number of foods according to their Oxygen Radical Absorbence Capacity. The higher the number, the more powerful the antioxidant value. All ratings were based on 3-1/2 ounces of the tested food. As a reference, carrots (high in the carotenoids) had a 207 rating.

Broccoli florets, Brussels sprouts, Raw spinach, and Kal

Broccoli carries a rating of 890, brussels sprouts 980, spinach 1,260, and kale 1,770. Be aware that these foods contain other phytonurients that go well beyond their antioxidant value.

Strawberries, Blueberries, and Raisins

Strawberries at 1,540, blueberries at 2,400, and raisins at 2,830, all rate high.

Prunes

Whoa! The lowly prune is top rated at 5,770. Eat prunes daily!

Soy products

Although not antioxidants, genistein and the other isoflavones in soy nevertheless reduce the risk of many kinds of cancer, stimulate bone formation, protet the kidneys, and inhibit deterioration of the cariovascular system. Regular consumption of soy products makes sense for most people—but not for children, and particularly not for infants, because of the high level of phytoestrogens in soy."

HARNESS YOUR ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT
by Claudette Rowley

"Don't play what's there, play what's not there."
—Miles Davis

Recently, a friend asked me, "What do I love about entrepreneurs?" I think what I enjoy the most is the *spirit* of entrepreneurship.

I define this spirit as one of risk taking, innovation, and pushing the limits of what's known and understood. Entrepreneurs dream up visions. And when they make these visions real, they create value—financial, social or cultural. Entrepreneurs view change as a force of possibility rather than as a creator of problems. To paraphrase Miles Davis, entrepreneurs play what's not there.

The Entrepreneurship Center at the Miami University of Ohio speaks to this spirit: "Entrepreneurship is the process of identifying, developing, and bringing a vision to life. The vision may be an innovative idea, an opportunity, or simply a better way of doing something. The end result of this process is the creation of a new venture, formed under conditions of risk and considerable uncertainty."

Throughout my coaching experience, I've noticed a particular mindset that helps to form the foundation from which this entrepreneurial spirit emerges. One way of describing this mindset is internal focus. Internal focus means that what goes on inside of your head and your heart greatly affects what happens for you in the outside world.

It's often not the external trappings—the MBA or the business seminars—that make or break an entrepreneur. It's the internal focus of believing in yourself, listening to your intuition, and tuning into your emotions that allow the entrepreneurial spirit of dreaming BIG to spring forth. By managing fear so that it doesn't become an obstacle, you are able to harness opportunity. Self-trust is paramount for risk-taking.

Here are some questions for you to ponder:

* Where do you focus your thoughts?
* Are your choices based on fear?
* Are they based on possibility?

A client described a situation to me in which she understood the difference between making fear-based choices and choices based on self-trust. An aspiring entrepreneur, she felt caught between remaining at her day job and leaping into full-time entrepreneurship. Through reflecting and listening to her intuition, it became clear that the only thing keeping her chained to her day job was fear.

She also recognized that by taking the risk to leave her job, she actually had a greater chance of entrepreneurial success. Her new business required the full weight of her attention and resources. And over time, she realized that the decisions she made based on her intuition and self-trust were the ones that led her business down a successful and rewarding path.

A healthy entrepreneurial spirit requires trust in yourself and your intuition, an ability to make clear choices, a flare for mobilizing resources, and a capacity to move beyond obstacles created by fear. Connect with your entrepreneurial spirit and see where it leads you.

A BIBLE RIDDLE

Moses once changed someone's name. Whose name did he change and what new name was given to them?

ANSWER: Moses changed Oshea's name to Jehoshua or Joshua. Numbers 13:16 "These are the names of the men which Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Oshea the son of Nun Jehoshua."

TODAY'S CHUCKLE

CALL TO GOD

It seems a man in Topeka, Kansas decides to write a book about churches around the country. He starts by flying to San Francisco and working east from there.

He goes to a very large church and begins taking pictures, etc. He spots a golden telephone on a wall and is intrigued with a sign which reads "$10,000.00 a minute." Seeking out the pastor, he asks about the phone and the sign. The pastor answers that this golden phone is, in fact, a direct line to Heaven, and if he pays the price he can talk directly to God. He thanks the pastor and continues on his way.

As he continues to visit churches in Seattle, Denver, Boise, Milwaukee, Chicago, New York, and on around the United States, he finds more phones with the same sign, and the same answer from each pastor.

Finally, he arrives in the South. Upon entering a church, lo and behold, he sees the usual golden telephone. But THIS time the sign reads "Calls: 25 cents." Fascinated, he asks to talk to the pastor.

"Reverend, I have been in cities all across the country and in each church I found this golden telephone, and I have been told it is a direct line to Heaven and that I could talk to God, but in the other churches the cost was $10,000.00 a minute. Your sign reads 25 cents a call. Why?"

The pastor, smiling benignly, replies, "Son, you're in the South now. It's a local call."

Go for it now.
The future is promised to no one.

A MIRACLE IN WISCONSIN

OCTOBER 14. In Appleton, Wisconsin, a revolution has occurred. It's taken place in the Central Alternative High School. The kids now behave. The hallways aren't frantic. Even the teachers are happy.

The school used to be out of control. Kids packed weapons. Discipline problems swamped the principal's office. But not since 1997.

What happened? Did they line every inch of space with cops? Did they spray valium gas in the classrooms? Did they install metal detectors in the bathrooms? Did they build holding cells in the gym?

Afraid not. In 1997, a private group called Natural Ovens began installing a healthy lunch program. Huh?

Fast-food burgers, fries, and burritos gave way to fresh salads, meats "prepared with old-fashioned recipes," and whole grain bread. Fresh fruits were added to the menu. Good drinking water arrived.

Vending machines were removed.

As reported in a newsletter called Pure Facts, "Grades are up, truancy is no longer a problem, arguments are rare, and teachers are able to spend their time teaching."

Principal LuAnn Coenen, who files annual reports with the state of Wisconsin, has turned in some staggering figures since 1997. Drop-outs? Students expelled? Students discovered to be using drugs? Carrying weapons? Committing suicide? Every category has come up ZERO. Every year.

Mary Bruyette, a teacher, states, "I don't have to deal with daily discipline issues. I don't have disruptions in class or the difficulties with student behavior I experienced before we started the food program."

One student asserted, "Now that I can concentrate I think it's easier to get along with people." What a concept—eating healthier food increases concentration.

Principal Coenen sums it up: "I can't buy the argument that it's too costly for schools to provide good nutrition for their students. I found that one cost will reduce another. I don't have the vandalism. I don't have the litter. I don't have the need for high security."

At a nearby middle school, the new food program is catching on. A teacher there, Dennis Abram, reports, "I've taught here almost 30 years. I see the kids this year as calmer, easier to talk to. They just seem more rational. I had thought about retiring this year and basically I've decided to teach another year—I'm having too much fun!"

Pure Facts, the newsletter that ran this story, is published by a non-profit organization called The Feingold Association, which has existed since 1976. Part of its mission is to "generate public awareness of the potential role of foods and synthetic additives in behavior, learning and health problems. The [Feingold] program is based on a diet eliminating synthetic colors, synthetic flavors, and the preservatives BHA, BHT, and TBHQ."

Thirty years ago there was a Dr. Feingold. His breakthrough work proved the connection between these negative factors in food and the lives of children. Hailed as a revolutionary advance, Feingold's findings were soon trashed by the medical cartel, since those findings threatened the drugs-for everything, disease-model concept of modern healthcare.

But Feingold's followers have kept his work alive. If what happened in Appleton, Wisconsin, takes hold in many other communities across America, perhaps the ravenous corporations who invade school space with their vending machines and junk food will be tossed out on their behinds. It could happen.

And perhaps ADHD will become a dinosaur. A non-disease that was once attributed to errant brain chemistry. And perhaps Ritalin will be seen as just another toxic chemical that was added to the bodies of kids in a crazed attempt to put a lid on behavior that, in part, was the result of a subversion of the food supply.

For those readers who ask me about solutions to the problems we face—here is a real solution. Help these groups. Get involved. Step into the fray. Stand up and be counted.

The drug companies aren't going to do it. They're busy estimating the size of their potential markets. They're building their chemical pipelines into the minds and bodies of the young.

Every great revolution starts with a foothold. Sounds like Natural Ovens and The Feingold Association have made strong cuts into the big rock of ignorance and greed.

INSPIRATION

I believe that our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become.

I believe that no matter how good a friend is, they're going to hurt you every once in a while, and you must forgive them for that.

I believe that just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have.

I believe that true friendship continues to grow, even over the longest distance. Same goes for true love.

I believe that it's taking me a long time to become the person I want to be.

I believe that you should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time you see them.

I believe that you can keep going—long after you think you can't.

I believe that we are responsible for what we do, no matter how we feel.

I believe that either you control your attitude—or it controls you.

I believe that heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences.

I believe that money is a lousy way of keeping score.

I believe that my best friend and I can do anything or nothing and have the best time.

I believe that sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you're down will be the ones to help you get back up.

I believe that sometimes when I'm angry I have the right to be angry, but that doesn't give me the right to be cruel.

I believe that maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you've had and what you've learned from them, and less to do with how many birthdays you've celebrated.

I believe that it isn't always enough to be forgiven by others. Sometimes you have to learn to forgive yourself.

I believe that no matter how bad your heart is broken, the world doesn't stop for your grief.

I believe that just because two people argue, it doesn't mean they don't love each other. And just because they don't argue, it doesn't mean they do.

I believe that you shouldn't be so eager to find out a secret. It could change your life forever.

I believe that two people can look at the exact same thing and see something totally different.

I believe that your life can be changed in a matter of hours by people who don't even know you.

I believe that even when you think you have no more to give, when a friend cries out to you, you will find the strength to help.

I believe that credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being.

I believe that the people you care about most in life are taken from you too soon.
