Hi, everyone? Hope you're not all caught up in the madness of the season, as you really need to be aware of what's happening out there. It affects not only publishers, but also all advertisers. I'm talking about the spam filters. They seem to be going up all over the place, and it is absolutely unbelievable how the baby's being thrown out with the bath water! I've written a whole article about it, which is the feature this issue. Please read it, and if you are an advertiser, please help us publishers save time by avoiding certain terms, as pointed out. If we all work together, we can overcome this issue without completely overhauling the way we do things.

And to my advertisers: If you discover that your ad has been "altered," you can guess why! The ^ symbol is going to be found in all the words that trigger the spam filters.

And now . . . meet Michele Newman . . . and, as it turns out, we live only half an hour apart and had lived only a couple of miles apart until this spring! And the world gets smaller . . .

Hi everyone!
I'm Michele Newman, writer/publisher of "The Wave" ezine.
I'm 37 years old from Tipp City, Ohio, which is a suburb of Dayton. I have a husband, Tim, who is 42, and four kids, Craig, Erica, Shane, and Crystal, who are all adults now, but all still live at home. (It's tough out there folks!)
We live in the country on 60 acres of mostly farmland, but our home is situated on 5 acres. Our animals include an old, smelly dog, Belle, who is settling into her senior years, and a Netherland Dwarf bunny, Cocoa, who is spoiled with a nicer home than ours! We also have four cats, Thomas, Norm, Sammy and Marty, but we get visits from all kinds of cuties like Possum, Raccoon, Skunk, Deer and Bunnies.
I have loved to write since I was about 10 years old. I wrote short stories that wowed my English teachers, who thought I had a very wild imagination. As I got older, I wrote more human interest stories, mainly about animals.
I have had several careers in my lifetime: I was a waitress while I was in college for nursing; then I was an ER nurse for a short time, until I settled into a family practice.
After a while, I got really burnt out seeing all of the hopelessness and sickness around me, so I did a complete turnaround and went into retail. I was a manager at Wal-mart for seven years, until I was involved in an accident that completely changed my life. After three years of rehab, learning how to walk again and live with chronic pain, I decided to slow down. I found the internet!
My husband and I started a little website about a year ago, but unfortunately, we were subject to a vicious attack that ruined our site. Fortunately, I have met some really wonderful people here on the internet, who have helped me find the courage to start writing again. I thank all of my great internet friends for being there for me, and giving me that nudge I needed.
I started publishing "The Wave" in August of this year, and have no plans on stopping any time soon. I still work outside the home, too, in an Italian restaurant as a cook, but only part time, as I still live with the pain of a compressed spine and multiple tumors in my spinal cord and brain. The rest of my time is spent writing my ezine, reading all my mail, and enjoying life with my family. My favorite quote is: "We may not have it all together, but together we have it all!"

SPAM CHECKER

Because of the tremendous amount and invasive nature of Spam, it is a rampant, ongoing problem. So many, many ISPs, Yahoo, and Hotmail are installing more and more filters.
However, in their good-intentioned efforts, they are inadvertently hurting those of us who do NOT spam. The victims are publishers and their advertisers. All of us are being caught up in this dragnet.
It seems as if there are certain terms that have been assigned and identified as Spam terms, because of the frequency that spammers use them. Unfortunately, these terms are also commonly used by publishers and legitimate advertisers.
Now for the good news: You can eliminate a lot of these "triggers" by removing many of these "spammer habits" from your e-mails.
It seems that sitesell.com has come up with The SpamCheck Report. It is one of their free-but-valuable products that are widely used. You'll find it's a useful style check at the same time. We all tend to repeat some words too often. The net result is a "cleaner" (no-spam-triggers) e-mail that will be opened and read by more people, because more of them will be receiving it!
So if you want to test one of your mailings, just send it here: spamcheck-mibw@sitesell.net BUT be absolutely SURE to put the word "TEST" (without the quotes) in the subject line just before your usual tag, e.g., TESTFlowers For You Ezine.
If you do it right, very shortly you will receive a full report back from SpamCheck analyzing your mailing and listing all the "errors" (spam triggers) that you need to correct to ensure that your mailing won't be getting dumped into "DELETED ITEMS" folders.
To give you a few examples, I have put the following common words into the clip library of my text editor in altered form, so that, as ads are submitted for publication, I can just c^l^i^c^k to paste them into the ad in the altered form, which saves me gobs of time. (There are lots of other words that are "no-no's," but there just isn't room to list them all here.
The words normally are: Bo_ss, Ric_h, ML_M, R_isk, C_lick, P_aid, F_ree, O_pt, and Guaran_teed. (If I were to put them in here properly, you may not receive this!) The words as I've altered them for publication are: B^o^s^s, R^i^c^h, M^L^M, R^i^s^k, C^l^i^c^k, P^a^i^d, F^R^E^E, o^p^t, and G^u^a^r^a^n^t^e^e^d.
You may wish to concoct your own alterations, but these worked for me when I resubmitted my mailing for analysis.
My publication could use a lot more altering to make it conform to these "standards," but I refuse to do much more. Instead, I choose to send an additional text email to each subscriber with a link to the latest issue after I've sent each HTML publication via email. That way, if they haven't received their HTML version, they can simply C^l^i^c^k on the link to read it.

On reaching his plane seat a man is surprised to see a parrot strapped in next to him. He asks the stewardess for a coffee whereupon the parrot squawks, "And get me a coke, you cow!" The stewardess, flustered, brings back a coke for the parrot and forgets the coffee.
When this omission is pointed out to her, the parrot drains its glass and bawls "And get me another coke dogface!" Quite upset, the girl comes back shaking with another coke but still no coffee.
Unaccustomed to such slackness the man tries the parrot's approach. "I've asked you twice for a coffee! Go and get it now you old goat!"
The next moment both he and the parrot have been wrenched up and thrown out of the emergency exit by two burly stewards.
Plunging downwards the parrot turns to him and says, "For someone who can't fly, you've got guts!"

TODAY'S ENGLISH LESSON

Seeing the same elementary mistakes over and over again has prompted this publisher to write an English lesson each issue.

This one concerns the misuse of "your" and "you're."
"Your" is a pronoun, pure and simple. It refers to something that belongs to someone, e.g., your hat, your things—they are yours.

"You're" is the contraction of "you are." Simple. How can anyone possibly misuse it? The apostrophe merely replaces the "a" in "are."

A Recipe to Help the Common Cold

For those of us who waited for the return of the crispy, chilly air and romantic snows, the thought of catching a winter cold is not so attractive. Stuffed and running nose, uncontrollable coughs, heavy and dizzy head, chill in the spine, and aches in the muscles could be quite miserable indeed.
Here I have a very simple recipe to treat this illness. It takes only ginger root, brown sugar and water, and takes just 15 minutes to prepare. However, this recipe is very effective and has been helping me to fight off the cold in winter ever since I was a child. And now I am using it for my own family.
INGREDIENTS:
1 piece of ginger root (about 1 ounce)
3 tablespoons of golden brown sugar
1-1/2 cups of water
PROCEDURE:
1. Slice the ginger root into about 2 mm thin pieces.
2. In a small pot, put 4-5 pieces of the ginger root slices, 3 tablespoons of the brown sugar, add 1 1/2 cups of water.
3. Heat the pot until water boils. About 1 minute later, turn the heat to medium and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
4. Pour the ginger drink into a cup with cover. (If you don't have a cup with matching lid, you can use foil to wrap the top instead)
USAGE:
Drink the entire ginger drink when it's still warm, and then cover yourself with a heavy blanket. The outcome will be better if you sweat after that. You can use the ginger drink 2-3 times each day. This home remedy is best suited for a cold that typically happens in the winter. Yet it may not be so effective for a cold that happens in a warmer season.
THE THEORY:
According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, the common cold can be divided into two types: cold-feng and warm-feng. In the winter season, the cold-feng is dominant; and when it invades the body, it staggers and disrupts the normal circulation of Qi and Mai-Ro system in the body. Therefore, the person will develop all the cold symptoms.
Ginger is a warm-natured food, it also has the ability of speed up the staggered Qi and Mai-Ro circulation, therefore is the main ingredient in this remedy. The brown sugar can add the sweet taste to the ginger drink, yet it also is warm-natured compared to white sugar; it is a great component to help normalize the circulation of the Mai-Ro system. Together, they fight the cold-feng that's been in the body and help the body to re-establish the normal circulation of the Qi and Mai-Ro system. During the warmer season, the feng is not predominately cold, so this remedy may not be as effective.
NOTES:
This ginger drink for cold belongs to a group of treatment called food-therapy that is part of the traditional Chinese medicine. It is a wonderful way of fighting diseases in a very natural way. There are various recipes of food-therapy for different kind of illnesses; some of them need added herbs. Some of these receipts are aimed at balancing and tuning the body systems to an optimal condition thus improving the health.
For thousands of years, the food-therapy has been helping Chinese people dealing with many common diseases. Even after the introduction of modern western medicine, Chinese people are still using them as an alternative treatment. However, all the food therapies are mild, they don't have enough strength to fight severe illnesses.

Christmas Story

Each December I vow to make Christmas a calm and peaceful experience. I had cut back on nonessential obligations—extensive card writing, endless baking, decorating, and even overspending. Still, I found myself exhausted, unable to appreciate the precious family moments, and of course, the true meaning of Christmas.
My son, Nicholas, was in kindergarten that year. It was an exciting season for a six year old. For weeks, he'd been memorizing songs for his school's "Winter Pageant."
I didn't have the heart to tell him I'd be working the night of the production. Unwilling to miss his shining moment, I spoke with his teacher. She assured me there'd be a dress rehearsal the morning of the presentation. All parents unable to attend that evening were welcome to come then. Fortunately, Nicholas seemed happy with the compromise.
So, the morning of the dress rehearsal, I filed in ten minutes early, found a spot on the cafeteria floor and sat down. Around the room, I saw several other parents quietly scampering to their seats. As I waited, the students were led into the room. Each class, accompanied by their teacher, sat cross-legged on the floor. Then, each group, one by one, rose to perform their song.
Because the public school system had long stopped referring to the holiday as "Christmas," I didn't expect anything other than fun, commercial entertainment—songs of reindeer, Santa Claus, snowflakes, and good cheer. So, when my son's class rose to sing, "Christmas Love, "I was slightly taken aback by its bold title.
Nicholas was aglow, as were all of his classmates, adorned in fuzzy mittens, red sweaters, and bright snowcaps upon their heads. Those in the front row center stage held up large letters, one by one, to spell out the song title. As the class would sing "C is for Christmas," a child would hold up the letter C. Then, "H is for Happy," and on and on, until each child holding up his portion had presented the complete message, "Christmas Love."
The performance was going smoothly, until suddenly, we noticed her—a small, quiet girl in the front row holding the letter "M" upside down—totally unaware her letter "M" appeared as a "W." The audience of 1st through 6th graders snickered at this little one's mistake. But she had no idea they were laughing at her, so she stood tall, proudly holding her "W."
Although many teachers tried to shush the children, the laughter continued until the last letter was raised, and we all saw it together. A hush came over the audience, and eyes began to widen. In that instant, we understood the reason we were there, why we celebrated the holiday in the first place, why even in the chaos, there was a purpose for our festivities.
For when the last letter was held high, the message then read loud and clear: "CHRISTWAS LOVE"
And, I believe, He still is.
