'elf Expressions Ezine

Get Hold of Your Elf!

"Get hold of your 'elf!"

Your weekly collection of marketing tips, hints, and advice interspersed with humor and other goodies to spice things up a bit. It is offered for entrepreneurs, would-be entrepreneurs, and online marketers, who need guidance, tutoring, and advice. The publisher's philosophy is that most learn faster by taking small bites, rather than large gulps. Small bites are chewed more thoroughly, swallowed, and digested more readily. Keeping that in mind, many features will be solo items. That way, you will not be bombarded or overwhelmed.

Small minds discuss people.
Mediocre minds discuss events.
Great minds discuss ideas.

NOTE: While reading Carl Jung's autobiography some years ago, I noticed that it wasn't until close to the end of the book before he even bothered to mention that he'd acquired a wife and children somewhere along the way!

This issue's Subscriber in the Spotlight is David Main -- actually, David preferred to do what I refer to as a character sketch, in that he submitted the following article in place of the usual stuff about family, etc.:

I Like To Create and Solve Problems - By David Main

I often joke with people that I have worked on computers since they were mouse driven. I am not that old but it seems that I have been on "these things" forever.

What I like to do most is create and help people solve problems. That is why the Internet fascinates me so much. New people coming on every day. Confused, as I was. People with time on the Internet as confused as I am sometimes. But there is one big difference.

Back in the early days we had scams and garbage to wade through. But today with more web sites than snowflakes in a heavy blizzard or rain drops in a flood we have lots more scams and garbage to wade through.

That is one of the biggest reasons I became an editor of an ezine again. This wading through all these scams and garbage was even getting to me. Watching people fail when all it would have taken was a little guidance. And even a little self-starting, self-motivation on their part.

If I may use this word, "hate," then the one thing I hate the most is poverty. Now I am not just talking about poverty of having to live on the streets. I am talking about the poverty that keeps us all from obtaining our dreams, our goals.

I won't sugar coat it. Success is a "tough road" to travel. But it is obtainable for everyone. It is how you get there that is the secret. And the secret is really no secret at all. It is what everyone has told you for years. Success is a matter of believing in yourself, putting action to your thoughts, and being persistent.

The Internet is the greatest avenue for people to succeed. It is a level playing field. The only people that succeed on the Internet are not the richest or the luckiest. It is the people that are willing to learn. To start with the basics and build. The basics in this case is learn how to advertise. Anyone can learn it. The best source of material I have found on the Internet is ebooks written in a format of the old "mail order" advertisers. Learning is where it is at, not speed.

I research. And then I research again. I don't pile my sites with a whole conglomeration of offerings just to make a buck. The secret I have found to this Internet business is to have repeat customers. Or in the case of MLMs, good, responsive downlines.

I know this was supposed to be a bio. Where I live and what I do. But my thoughts, words, and deeds are who I really am. So all the above words are your picture of who I have been, what I am doing now, and where we all (you and I) want to go from here. Thank you.

TODAY'S CHUCKLE

Worried that his son was spending too much money on dates, a father asked the boy how much his last date had cost.

The son calculated a minute then replied, "Oh, about $15 or so I think."

"Well," said the Father, "I'm proud of you for finally coming up with an inexpensive evening."

"To be honest Dad," the son went on, "we'd have done more, but that was all the money she had."

TODAY'S ENGLISH LESSON

Seeing the same elementary mistakes over and over again has prompted this publisher to write an English lesson each issue. This one concerns the misuse of "lose" and "loose." Now listen up!

"Lose" refers misplacing something, or it can refer to losing something, such as money. If you can use the word "loss" to refer back to it, you want to use "lose," and not "loose."

"Loose" refers to something that is set free or something that isn't tight, such as a loose screw, or loose change.

INTERNET HINTS & TIPS

A novice writes:

During my website design "ongoing learning experience," I have discovered that the Internet offers many great free resources, such as design templates and clipart.

Unfortunately, the "good stuff" -- such as intelligent email forms, postcard systems, databases, counters, stats programs, and tell-a-friend systems -- are all "CGI" programs.

CGI and Perl scripts require special configuring and installation on my ISP's server. Because I'm not a "programmer type," I have to pass up all these powerful cool scripts. What am I to do?

Response from webmaster:

Great question, and I've got a great news answer. Even a novice can add CGI functionality to their website and do things like: Create your own search engine, start a classified ad service, start your own FFA ("Free For All" links) site, implement powerful traffic building scripts into your website, add user polls, a tell-a-friend button, and lots more. You can even capture "environmental variables" of your visitors, such as their IP number and their browser type and version.

In a moment I'll tell you how you can get CGI scripts installed on your website's server. But first, here's a quickie on CGI.

CGI ("Common Gateway Interface") is a standard for running external programs from a www server. Most CGI programs are written in a powerful language called "Perl." CGI gives you the ability to look up something in a database and then present it as part of your HTML webpage, and many more useful things.

When you purchase a CGI script, in many cases the seller will install and configure it for you for $50 or $100. Some CGI scripts (usually the more expensive ones) come with free installation.

There are some excellent resource websites which offer free CGI programs. Unfortunately, most of us can only wish to have these programs as part of our website.

Now for the good news I promised you.

There are companies which will install and configure CGI programs on your server for a very low fee. Some charge as low as $15!

That means that you can hit the free CGI websites and download some wonderful and useful CGI scripts. For free. So you can set up a full-blown search engine, or a dating/matchmaking service, just for the wee price of paying an installer.

I have prepared a list of websites for companies that offer low-cost CGI installation. Click to "http://www.eHits.com /AskVicki/012901" I've also included a great CGI resource site with about 2,000 downloadable CGI scripts.

INSPIRATION

God's presence is here on earth. That is why we can experience such highs of joy--but they cannot last because, even though God's presence is everywhere, we have to be tuned in to His station. We must be on the same frequency. And if we move too far away, we cannot bring Him in. We can search and search the dial, but unless we get on the same wave-length and tune in to His signal, we cannot hear His program. We have many other stations from which to choose. But once we discover His frequency and stay close to His signal, His station comes in loud and clear.
