And now . . . meet Susan Gravelle . . .

Hello everyone!
My name is Suzanne Gravelle. I get a kick out of telling the kids that I teach as a substitute teacher that I actually rode a horse to school when I was their age. I grew up in a very frugal and pragmatic family in the farmland north of Dawson Creek, over halfway up the province of British Columbia here in Canada. That is "way north" to most of the readers here.
We had no electricity or running water, and it is testimony to the strength and courage of my mom and dad that they persevered and brought us up healthily with a good work ethic and a passionate love of the outdoors, animals, nature, and good fun. I remember vividly playing ante-i-over with a ratty old ball over top the roof of the ice house at the one-room school I went to with 9 other kids. Falling off the horse on the way home was an excuse to get her down in the ditch and make a flying leap back up on her back and carry on. "She" was a wonderfully patient, dappled percheron with a wide back and doe eyes.
Going to university was a huge shock, but I chose the smallest one in the province that had the best teaching college. I couldn't get out and into the classroom fast enough, and at the age of 20 (just!) was moved to Vancouver Island with my new little Toyota stationwagon, a whack of student loans to pay off, and a desire to be out in the big world.
I met my husband there, and we worked and travelled and did little theatre and hiked and camped together for 7 years when some itch or other seems to take place, and we grew apart.
Not to be outdone, I met people who introduced me to my second career. I began to go to mining exploration camps to be chief cook and first aid attendant. The stories I could sit down and tell you of those 20 years would keep you in your seat for awhile. If it wasn't polar bears in the high Arctic, it was scorpions in the Sierras of Mexico to deal with. All good years, but all things do change—you know, the only constant in life is change.
So now my new husband and I are living in Vancouver—in the heart of the city. I quite like the change from the countryside. I am involved still in teaching and some first aid, but no more mining camps. I have started up 2 home-based businesses and try to keep learning and growing through Peak Potentials Training. We had Mark Victor Hansen and Robert Kiyosaki and Conrad Levinson and James Ray speaking to us at a seminar in early December here in Vancouver, and it was an awe inspiring weekend.
I stay as healthy as I can, even though I have arthritis in my hips, which slows me down from the telemarking and cross-country skiing that we do out of our cabin north of Kamloops B.C. at Clearwater. But the wilderness of Wells Gray Park is phenomenal still, and we enjoy it all we can. We will retire there one day to follow our love of crafts and gardening. That is after we've spent the winters in Costa Rica at our Bed and Breakfast/Environmental Research Center—you can tell that we have a big dream or two left to accomplish in our lives.

Publicity . . . Grab It!

Never let a day go by that you don't do at least one thing to promote your name on the 'net.
I'm assuming, of course, that you are interested in enhancing the results of your marketing efforts.
Better yet, get yourself a plan. If it's no more than a couple of notes on a scrap of paper, it's better than none at all.
Ideally, your plan will be just a tad more organized. Devote a special notebook (or 3x5 card index) to your publicity plan. I strongly advise against keeping your plan on the computer, because things tend to get lost in the shuffle if you don't have something physical to glom onto.
Whatever method you choose, dividers are helpful.
Of course, it is also assumed that you've already set down some goals (a destination), or else this roadmap will lead to nowhere.
One section of your plan should be notes on where you will direct your efforts.
Another should be on how your efforts will be directed.
To determine where your efforts will be concentrated might require some research. For example, if you're going to write articles and promote them, you'll have to search out all the right sites to do that.
As to the system you will use to accomplish your end, you will have to devise it, or you can use some software programs already out there, including, for example, Ezine Announcer. (No, I'm not getting a penny for this plug!)
After you have your targets and your system in place (and programmed), you need to set up a schedule and stick to it.
As stated at the beginning, you need to promote every day if you are to enjoy more than a modicum of success, online or off.

Today's English Lesson

Seeing the same elementary mistakes over and over again has prompted this publisher to write an English lesson each issue.

This one is short and sweet: "wonder" vs. "wander."
I know, I know. You can't believe someone could misuse these, but I've seen it—recently.
"Wonder" as a noun is a sense of awe. As a verb, "wander" is to muse or reflect on.
As I "wander" through this vast wilderness of the Internet, I "wonder" how these people cannot know the difference between these two words!

I'm Back!

Well, here we are another week into 2003, and although we all wish for good luck and happiness in the new year, sometimes it seems we don't always receive it.
This new year has been nothing but one problem after the other for this publisher, and last Friday almost blew my ezine clear out of the water.
I just recently finished changing my ezine format from text to html, and the results were pleasing to me. I can thank my fellow publisher, Ron Dunn, of The Christian Marketer, for that.
I was in the middle of moving my website to another that would allow more space for my autoresponder, when suddenly my other hosting would now allow me in. I could not reach my subscribers and had NO BACKUP!
I couldn't contact my host and went into a frenzy. I had no one to mail to and thought Dee's Helpful Info would have to start all over after 2 years. It seemed I was doomed . . . but my host finally contacted me and said somehow passwords had changed . . . He straightened it out, sent me a copy of my list, and now I have several copies . . . not all in the same place.
But even after I thought all was well, a problem arose at home, sending me back to my previous frayed nerve status. Our furnace was acting up . . . w onderful—a night using a kerosene heater . . . but now, quietly . . . fingers crossed . . . shhhhh . . . not too loud . . . all is fine.

If your messages contain characters like & or #8217, then you probably used Microsoft Word to create your messages.
You must use a plain text editor to compose your messages. Many common word processing applications, such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Works, and WordPerfect, insert hidden formatting codes into documents. When you try to copy and paste these documents into other places using your web browser, the browser doesn't understand those codes. This results in strange characters interspersed throughout your messages.

Smiling is Good for the Bottom Line

The New Year has begun, and we all know what that means—New Year's resolutions. Much has and will be written on the subject. Let me add to that.
I would like to suggest that in 2003 we all make an effort to be nice. I hear people say over and over again, "I don't have time to be nice." You've probably heard that yourself. You may even have said it.
Whenever I hear those words, I wonder, "How hard is it to be nice?" and "How much time does it take? It seems to me that there is less time involved in being kind and courteous than there is in being abrupt and unfriendly.
In the business world, rudeness means lost customers. When you don't take the time to be courteous, the customer becomes unhappy, even angry, and you have to spend more time setting things right. If the customers just take it and walk away, chances are they won't come back and they will tell everyone they know.
Then guess what? You have to spend time finding new customers. If you aren't the boss or the owner but are the employee, you might have to spend your time hunting for a new job.
So why not resolve to be nice to everyone to begin with?
Smile at the customers. Look them in the eye when you offer to help them. Listen to what they are saying to you. Go out of your way to please them. Take time to be nice and count the rewards.
Your business will grow. You'll get a promotion. You won't have to work so hard looking for new business because your happy customers will keep coming back and they will tell other people about your great service and friendly people.
As an added bonus, you'll be healthier. Studies show that being nice to other people is good for you. It causes less stress and anxiety—just the opposite of rude behavior.
And it is easy to do. There is no sacrifice or self-discipline involved. Just relax, be friendly and 2003 will be a happy and profitable year.

Pancakes

Six-year-old Brandon decided one Saturday morning to fix his parents pancakes. He found a big bowl and spoon, pulled a chair to the counter, opened the cupboard and pulled out the heavy flour canister, spilling it on the floor.
He scooped some of the flour into the bowl with his hands, mixed in most of a cup of milk, and added some sugar, leaving a floury trail on the floor which by now had a few tracks left by his kitten.
Brandon was covered with flour and getting frustrated. He wanted this to be something very good for Mom and Dad, but it was getting very bad. He didn't know what to do next, whether to put it all onto the oven or on the stove (and he didn't know how the stove worked!).
Suddenly, he saw his kitten licking from the bowl of mix and reached to push her away, knocking the egg carton to the floor. Frantically, he tried to clean up this monumental mess but slipped on the eggs, getting his pajamas white and sticky. And just then he saw Dad standing at the door.
Big crocodile tears welled up in Brandon's eyes. All he'd wanted to do was something good, but he'd made a terrible mess. He was sure a scolding was coming, maybe even a spanking. But his father just watched him.
Then, walking through the mess, he picked up his crying son, hugged him, and loved him, getting his own pajamas white and sticky in the process.
That's how God deals with us. We try to do something good in life, but it turns into a mess. Our marriage gets all sticky, or we insult a friend, or we can't stand our job, or our health goes sour. Sometimes we just stand there in tears, because we can't think of anything else to do.
That's when God picks us up and loves us and forgives us, even though some of our mess gets all over Him. But just because we might mess up, we can't stop trying to "make pancakes," for God or for others.
Sooner or later we'll get it right, and then we'll be glad we tried . . .
