Today, publicly, I wish to give thanks to my Lord for all the uncountable blessings He has bestowed upon me. In the past two weeks, I suppose there are probably a lot of people in this world counting their blessings in the aftermath of Katrina.

Sometimes I'm simply overwhelmed by the goodness of our Lord in my life. Though I've had my share of trials and difficult times, when I look around, I can see very clearly that I've been spared burdens that would have been too much for me to endure.

And I'm very grateful for that.

The Romans had an old custom of giving soldiers an emergency ration—cakes of sesame seed and honey called Halva. Experience had convinced them that man could walk farther and survive longer on this ration than on any other food of equal weight.
Sesame seeds are richer in calcium than milk, cheese or nuts; their protein content is 20% higher than meats. Plus the seeds are rich in unsaturated fatty acids; 55% of the seed is oil. These tiny seeds have a high content of B vitamins, niacin, inositol, choline, and Vitamin E, and are an excellent source of lecithin, an organic phosphorized fat, which is a chief constituent of brain and nerve tissue. The concentration of lecithin in the master pituitary gland and the pineal is higher than in any other part of the body.
Sesame seeds, particularly in the form of Halvah, an aphrodisiac food, has been prescribed by doctors to rid women of the housewife syndrome, or chronic fatigue syndrome, insomnia, and lethargy in lovemaking. A whopping 87% responded with startling change. Sesame seeds have abundant magnesium and potassium, and honey is rich in aspartic acid.
Get a seed grinder at a health food store for about $10-20 to grind sesame seed and mix with honey to make Halvah. We bought a small coffee grinder at Wal-Mart, which is quick and easy. This is how you do it.
1 c. sesame seeds
2 tsp. coagulated, natural honey
Grind sesame seeds in electric seed grinder. It takes all of about 10 seconds. Pour sesame meal into a large cup and knead honey into it with a spoon until honey is well mixed and Halvah acquires the consistency of hard dough. Serve as is, or make small balls and roll in whole sesame seeds, shredded coconut, sunflower seeds, or wheat germ, and enjoy one of the finest, best tasting virility foods in the world.
You can also buy Tahini (made with sesame seeds) and use it as you would peanut butter, or mix it with water in a blender for sesame milk.

You Always Get What You Expect

You need to learn to expect—demand things—just assume that they’re for you.
I remember years ago when I was working as a secretary in the biggest law firm in Dayton, Ohio.
One day they hired a new secretary.
Keep in mind that, back then, women in offices were always expected to wear skirts or dresses.
But I guess Connie was oblivious to that, because she reported for work her first day wearing a pantsuit! She was from Texas, I believe, and dress codes down there were probably much more lenient.
Obviously, Connie had assumed that she was dressed appropriately.
I am sure that Connie was unaware of the radical influence she had in our office. Because the dress code wasn’t the only thing she caused to change.
Lawyers are notorious for charging high fees. On the other side of the coin, however, as a group, they are niggardly when it comes to paying their secretaries well. And this firm was one of the worst.
Connie, however, asked for . . . and received . . . a starting salary at $10-$15 a week more than most of the rest of us were making at that time (quite a difference back in the 60’s).
Again, she had just assumed that what she had demanded was the norm and not unreasonable or out of the norm.
We all need to do that. Rarely do we receive something we desire unless we are expecting it. We can want something from now until we die, but if we never expect to get it, chances are that we won't!
Also, remember that living with an attitude of expectation and anticipation creates an atmosphere ripe with enthusiasm. And enthusiasm is contagious—one of those positive qualities that attracts good.

Test Your Bible Knowledge

What verse(s) in the two books of Timothy, give(s) strong evidence that the apostle Paul wrote one or both of these books while in Rome?
Answer — The answer in 2 Timothy 1:16-17, which says: The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain: But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me.
This is pretty strong evidence that Paul was indeed in Rome at the time of the writing of at least the second book to Timothy. Some Bible scholars feel the second book of Timothy was written between 65-67 A.D. and that it was the last recorded words of Paul before his death. Church history says Paul was beheaded in 66 A.D.—just four years before the fall of Jerusalem.

The Contractors

Three contractors were visiting a tourist attraction on the same day. One was from New York, another from Texas, and the third from Florida.
At the end of the tour, the guard asked them what they did for a living. When they all replied that they were contractors, the guard said, "Hey, we need one of the rear fences redone. Why don't you guys take a look at it and give me a bid?" So, to the back fence they all went to check it out.
First to step up was the Florida contractor. He took out his tape measure and pencil, did some measuring, and said, "Well I figure the job will run about $900. $400 for materials, $400 for my crew, and $100 profit for me."
Next was the Texas contractor. He also took out his tape measure and pencil, did some quick figuring, and said, "Looks like I can do this job for $700. $300 for materials, $300 for my crew, and $100 profit for me."
Without so much as moving, the New York contractor said, "$2,700."
The guard, incredulous, looked at him and said, "You didn't even measure like the other guys! How did you come up with such a high figure?"
"Easy," he said. "$1,000 for me, $1,000 for you and we hire the guy from Texas."

If you want to be successful, do what successful people do and what unsuccessful people won't.

Many people would love to be able to build their own home business. The chance to be your own boss, set your own working hours, and be able to work in your pajamas if you wish is a huge draw to so many of us!
However, many people forget that a home based business is just that. . . a business. There are many legitimate home based business opportunities; however, they are not get-rich-quick solutions. They require a lot of hard work and dedication, and at first will more than likely have a slow turn-around in profit.
But, if a person is truly dedicated and willing to work hard, it is very possible to create a successful home business.
Another aspect of the home based business opportunity that is often forgotten is that, with nearly all opportunities, you can not work solely from h&ome.
As a business owner, you are responsible for your own networking, marketing, and advertising. This means you will need to spend time out and about, putting up fliers, brochures, and whatever other advertising avenues you choose to use.
You will need to talk to people. In a typical day, we speak to dozens of people, from cashiers at the supermarket, to gas station clerks, to our co-workers and neighbors. Every time you speak to another human being is a chance to promote your business.
The person you are speaking with may not be interested, but they know dozens of people, too, and they might know someone else who would be interested! It never hurts to talk to people. . . the worst they can do is say no.

Washing Clothes

Years ago an Alabama grandmother gave the new bride the following recipe:
This is an exact copy as written and found in an old scrapbook—with spelling errors and all.
Build fire in backyard to heat kettle of rain water.
Set tubs so smoke won't blow in eyes if wind is pert.
Shave one hole cake of lie soap in boilin water.
Sort things, make 3 piles
1 pile white,
1 pile colored,
1 pile work britches and rags.
To make starch, stir flour in cool water to smooth, then thin down with boiling water.
Take white things, rub dirty spots on board, scrub hard, and boil, then rub colored don't boil just wrench and starch.
Take things out of kettle with broom stick handle, then wrench, and starch.
Hang old rags on fence.
Spread tea towels on grass.
Pore wrench water in flower bed.
Scrub porch with hot soapy water.
Turn tubs upside down.
Go put on clean dress, smooth hair with hair combs.
Brew cup of tea, sit and rock a spell and count your blessings.

T-Bone Steak, Yellow Roses, and Friends!

I walked into the grocery store not particularly interested in buying groceries. I wasn't hungry. The pain of losing my husband was still too raw. And this grocery store held so many sweet memories.
He often came with me, and almost every time he'd pretend to go off and look for something special. I knew what he was up to. I'd always spot him walking down the aisle with the three yellow roses in his hands.
He knew I loved yellow roses. With a heart filled with grief, I only wanted to buy my few items and leave, but even grocery shopping was different since he had passed on.
Shopping for one took time, a little more thought than it had for two. Standing by the meat, I searched for the perfect small steak and remembered how he had loved his steak.
Suddenly a woman came beside me. She was blonde, slim and lovely In a soft green pantsuit I watched as she picked up a large package of T-bones, dropped them in her basket. hesitated, and then put them back.
She turned to go and once again reached for the pack of steaks. She saw me watching her and she smiled. "My husband loves T-bones, but honestly, at these prices, I don't know."
I swallowed the emotion down my throat and met her pale blue eyes.
"My husband passed away eight days ago," I told her, glancing at the package in her hands, I fought to control the tremble in my voice.
"Buy him the steaks, and cherish every moment you have together."
She shook her head and I saw the emotion in her eyes as she placed the package in her basket and wheeled away.
I turned and pushed my cart across the length of the store to the dairy products/ There I stood, trying to decide which size milk I should buy. A quart, I finally decided, and moved on to the ice cream. If nothing else, I could always fix myself an ice cream cone.
I placed the ice cream in my cart and looked down the aisle toward the front. I saw first the green suit, then recognized the pretty lady coming towards me.
In her arms she carried a package. On her face was the brightest smile I had ever seen. I would swear a soft halo encircled her blonde hair as she kept walking toward me, her eyes holding mine.
As she came closer, I saw what she held, and tears began misting in my eyes. "These are for you," she said and placed three beautiful long-stemmed yellow roses in my arms. "When you go through the line, they will know these are paid for."
She leaned over and placed a gentle kiss on my cheek, then smiled again.
I wanted to tell her what she'd done, what the roses meant, but still unable to speak, I watched as she walked away as tears clouded my vision.
I looked down at the beautiful roses nestled in the green tissue wrapping and found it almost unreal. How did she know? Suddenly the answer seemed so clear. I wasn't alone.
"Oh, you haven't forgotten me, have you?" I whispered, with tears in my eyes. He was still with me, and she was his angel.
Every day be thankful for what you have and who you are.
