Volume 8 — Issue 24 — June 24, 2008
Published every Tuesday
Happy Tuesday, everyone! Life just seems to get better every day. Friday I had a reunion with a dear friend and former neighbor that I had not seen in probably five years, and while she was in my office, my daughter surprised her by driving over for the day from Indiana. Jen and Heather (my friend's daughter) are nine days apart in age and grew up together for a few years.
We had lunch and a jolly good time for a few hours before Rebecca had to leave. She is in the military and spent a year in Iraq, having returned a couple of years ago. But she still does humanitarian work, both with the military and through local churches. She recently returned from Cambodia, where she was part of a team of sixteen professionals, who provided dental care to many hurting people.
She shared pictures with us and described the primitive conditions. There are few laws, if any, and the necessities are just not there. Babies, for instance, have no diapers and just go whenever and wherever, with the mothers cleaning them up as best they can with limited water resources. Sanitary facilities are practically nonexistent.
She also showed us pictures of part of the "Killing Fields" (You probably remember the movie) . . . It was gruesome and brutal.
All of those scenes gave me yet another reason to count my blessings that we live in a relatively free and prosperous nation (at least, as of today).
Hope you enjoy today's issue!

A Healthier You
Buzzing right along with our addition/subtraction lifestyle changes, it's time to add . . . and this time it is organic, unrefined, virgin coconut oil.
If you've never tasted this oil, you are in for a real treat. I've been eating it on my toast instead of butter and also using it to cook with for quite some time now. Yummy!
To shed excess poundage, take a tablespoonful in the morning and another in the late afternoon. Try it for thirty days and see if you don't lose a pants size or two.
It also is said to help arthritis, high blood pressure, circulation, mood swings and depression, constipation, and even has been known to send cancer into remission. It promotes heart health and supports your immune system and healthy metabolism. And it also helps support the proper functioning of your thyroid gland.
Back in the 1930’s, a dentist named Dr. Weston Price traveled throughout the South Pacific, examining traditional diets and their effect on dental and over-all health. He found that those eating diets high in coconut products were healthy and trim, despite the high fat concentration in their diet.
The dangerous oils are transfats, not saturated fats, as was held for years.

Are You Smarter Than a Bird?
Let's hope so, although I have doubts about some people I've met in the last twenty years or so . . . so-called "bird brains!!
The Lord tells us that all the hairs on our heads are numbered and that we are far more valuable than sparrows.
But are all of us really smarter than those little creatures?
Consider that they are not lazy, they do not procrastinate, they do not abuse each other, they faithfully care for and feed their young, they multiply and replenish the earth and do not abort or abuse their offspring, they provide housing for their families, they defend their chicks, they do not lie, steal, or act detrimentally to other birds.
Nuthatches and titmice store insects and seeds in bark crevices during the summer and fall for winter consumption.
Acorn Woodpeckers store acorns that fit snugly in a hole that the bird has prepared in the bark of pine and oak trees.
But pigeons have to be the most caring of all birds . . . yes! Ever wonder why you never see "baby" pigeons?
First of all, they hide their nests.
They balance their messy nests of sticks inside the guts of bridges, or atop tall buildings, or on top of your air conditioner.
Secondly, they lay only two eggs at a time and spoil those babies shamefully. The parents will feed the babies until they're totally feathered out. By the time they leave the nest, they'll be about the same size as the adults.
And the doting parents don't feed these butterballs your typical bird baby food. These birdlets get something called "pigeon milk." Both parents manufacture in their crops, or throats, a rich, fatty "milk" that looks much like yellow cottage cheese that they then regurgitate and expel into the throats of their darlings.
After 8-10 days of this ambrosial diet, the parents begin mixing in solid food and water. They'll eat heavily, then drink a lot of water to easily chuck up the grain. And did you know pigeons drink like horses?
And do the parents flinch at all this work, this cheese-making, this grain-chucking, this drinking-like-a-horse? Of course not. If all's going well with the first nest, they'll build another near by and lay the next batch. They'll take turns sitting on the next set, while the other feeds the squabs. And they'll do that four to six times a season. So, not only are there baby pigeons, there are baby pigeon assembly lines.
So, when the fledglings finally do leave the nest, it's hard to tell the babies from the adults.
In other words, the parents do a thorough job of preparing their young to cope with life.

Unanswered Prayer
The preacher's 5 year-old daughter noticed that her

"Well, honey," he began, proud that his daughter was so

"How come He doesn't answer it?" she asked.

Today's English Lesson
Seeing the same elementary mistakes over and over again has prompted this publisher to write an English lesson each issue. Look for some of these lessons to be repeated, because the mistakes are, as is the case in point!
This concerns the misuse of "let's" and "lets."
"Let's" get this straight now: "Let's" is a contraction, which stands for "let us."
"Lets" is a plural verb, which is interchangeable with the word "allow." In other words, it gives permission.
"Let's" go to the park.
Mom "lets" us go to the park.
See the difference? Another way to get the point across:
"Come on, Mom, let us go to the park . . . please?"
"Great! Mom is letting us go—let's leave now!"
"Lets" also can be used interchangeably with "abates," as when the storm "lets" up, or when the storm "abates."
Wrong: "Let's us go." See how redundant? Uncontracted, it reads: "Let us us go."
When in doubt, uncontract—and you will usually get the right usage.

Affiliate Internet Marketing
by Rebecca Game
What is Affiliate Internet Marketing?
Definition —
Affiliate internet marketing is a superb introduction to ecommerce and earning extra money, but according to TamingTheBeast.net, it's also "a numbers game."
In a nutshell, affiliate internet marketing is an advertising arrangement, so to speak, in which a company offers to pay you, as an individual or business owner, an agreed sum of money based one of the following advertising results from your site:
—a click through from your web site to the business' site;
—a fixed amount for a lead, where a visitor would sign up for a newsletter or other offer; or
—a percentage of the amount of a purchase made by a visitor as a result of a click through from a link posted at your web site.
The day that you stop learning is the day that you start decreasing
your rewards and start suffering from frustration and lower levels of satisfaction.

Happiness is a Choice!
by Dr. Paula Fellingham
I remember the moment it happened. I was listening intently as the seminar presenter quoted Eleanor Roosevelt when she said, "No one can make me feel inferior without my consent." And the power of those words immediately sunk deep into my heart. I thought, "That’s great! That means that no one can make me angry unless I allow it! And no one can offend me without my permission! That means . . .
happiness is a choice!"
I decided right then and there to make conscious choices about how I respond to others and to my circumstances. I resolved, in that moment, to refuse to be offended—by anyone.
Within the hour my resolve was tested. The lecture came to a close and my cell phone rang. It was my oldest son explaining that one of our subcontractors had just walked off the job, and our home construction would be delayed, again. My son reported that the contractor got a better job offer and just left.
As I hung up the phone I had a knot in my stomach as I reflected on what I'd just learned. Well, now, what was I going to do with my new understanding? I squared my shoulders and thought, "I refuse to be upset. This is a choice . . . how strong am I?"
The gloom lifted almost immediately as I pulled out the yellow pages and thought, "It's just a house—no one is hurt, I'm going to be positive—this too will pass." I continued filling my mind with such thoughts until I connected with the enthusiastic voice of another contractor who assured me he'd be there first thing in the morning.
Later that same day, my sister stopped by, very upset. Her daughter's bridal shower had been poorly attended and she cried, "You have no idea how offended I am!" And I repeated Eleanor Roosevelt's words in my mind.
Since that pivotal moment at the seminar, I've learned that choosing to be happy is absolutely liberating! When you truly understand that happiness is a choice, you no longer say, "You make me so angry!" because no one makes you angry. You don't say, "That's just the way I am—I always get depressed when it rains," because you choose your response to life.
Dale Carnegie, author of "How To Win Friends and Influence People," understood this principle well. He remarked, "Happiness doesn't depend on outer conditions, it depends on inner conditions. It isn't where you are or what you have that makes you happy or unhappy, it's what you think about it. For example, two people can be in the same place at the same time, and one is happy and the other is unhappy. Why? Because of a different mental attitude."
So what can we do to raise our "happiness level"? Here are three ways to improve your mental attitude and enjoy life a little more:
Starting today, decide to choose happiness. Abraham Lincoln remarked, "Folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be." One way to do this is to label and replace your negative thoughts. When a negative thought enters your mind, think something like, "That was negative!" and replace it with a positive thought like, "I'm sure if I knew all the facts I'd understand him better." Or, "That's not like me to think negative thoughts; I'm usually a positive person." Using good self-talk to improve your state of mind is highly effective.
Use upbeat words. "Words affect your emotions and attitudes," says Maryann Troiani, Ph.D., author of Spontaneous Optimism, explaining that pessimistic people tend to use "upsetting words," while optimists use "upbeat words." So when life gets challenging, say, "I'm annoyed," rather than "I'm angry," or "I'm a little concerned," instead of "I'm so worried!"
Fill your cup. Whether it's reading a good book, talking with a friend, painting, or playing the guitar, do something each day that you enjoy. You'll be more pleasant to others when you take a little time out for yourself. The truth is: when our own cups are filled, we give love better from our overflow.

Giving/Sharing/Generosity
It's best to start the discipline of generosity when the amounts are small. It's easy to give ten cents out of a dollar; it's a little harder to give a hundred thousand out of a million.
Giving is better than receiving, because giving starts the receiving process.
Nothing teaches character better than generosity.
Here's what is exciting about sharing ideas with others: If you share a new idea with ten people, they get to hear it once and you get to hear it ten times.
Sharing makes you bigger than you are. The more you pour out, the more life will be able to pour in.
Somebody says, "Well, I can't be concerned about other people. About the best I can do is to take care of myself." Well, then you will always be poor.
What you give becomes an investment that will return to you multiplied at some point in the future.
When somebody shares, everybody wins.
The amount you give isn't important. What matters is what that amount represents in terms of your life.
Only by giving are you able to receive more than you already have.
