Okay, for those of you who are following along with our addition/subtraction lifestyle changes, we're about to add again.
And this time it will be resistance exercises. I know, I know, there's that dreaded word again . . . but it's not as bad as you think!
Resistance exercise involves pushing and pulling your muscles, either with machines or by using simple weights. I am not much for machines, but I am big on weights, and I don't mean the kind that over-tax you.
Just start with very lightweight ones that you can get for a few bucks at any discount store in the sporting goods department. Or you can just grab a couple of cans out of your kitchen cabinet to get started today. And it's not the amount of weight that matters, but it is how you use them.
Correct resistance exercise is not strenuous, and it's not rocket science. I used to think that you had to do a lot of repetitions to benefit. Not so!
In fact, lifting slowly allows you to feel the "burn." The slower you go, the more burn you feel! You build the muscle while decimating fat. (Don't expect to see a difference on the scale, because, as you probably know, muscle does weigh more.) And you don't have to do resistance exercise every day either . . . every other day works just as well.

Clarification
Dear readers, I need to clarify my reference in last week's feature article to having started my Christian walk by using the New International Version of the Bible. As one of our readers so astutely pointed out, the N.I.V. is a wholly inferior one. (Thank God that I no longer use it!)
These are the differences he pointed out:
For example, the word "hell" occurs 31 times in the Old Testament of the King James Version. In the Old Testament of the N.I.V. it occurs not once! The word "hell" is not even in the N.I.V. Old Testament!
The King James Version condemms Lucifer to hell: "Yet thou shall be
brought down to hell . . . " The N.I.V. does not condemn Lucifer to hell! The N.I.V. reads, "But you are brought down to the grave . . ." We all go to the grave! There is a world of difference between a grave and hell!
And this is an example of a translation problem: Philippians 2:6 in the K.J.V. clearly declares the deity of Jesus Christ: "Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God." The N.I.V. reads, "Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped." The N.I.V. subtlely perverts the deity of Jesus Christ!
The N.I.V. perverts the virgin birth. In Luke 2:33, the K.J.V. reads, "And Joseph and His mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of Him." The N.I.V. reads, "The child's father and mother marveled at what was said about him." The "child's father"? Was Joseph Jesus' father? Not if you believe the virgin birth! Not if you believe John 3:16, that Jesus was the Son of God! A subtle perversion of the virgin birth. See also Luke 2:43.
The N.I.V. removes the blood of Jesus Christ.
Colossians 1:14 of the K.J.V. reads, "in whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins." The N.I.V. reads, "in whom we have redemption, [ . . . ] the forgivenesss of sins." The N.I.V. rips out the precious words "through his blood"! (They do have about the "blood" listed in the footnotes, but how many readers of this version will go to the footnote to get the meaning of that?) Redemption is only through his blood. Hebrews 9:22 reads ". . . without shedding of blood is no remission." The old song says, "What can wash away my sins, nothing but the blood of Jesus!"
The N.I.V. perverts John 3:16 into a lie!
John 3:16 in the N.I.V. reads, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." Jesus was not "the one and only son."
Adam is called the "son of God" in Luke 3:38; there are "sons of God" in Job 1:6; and Christians are called "sons of God" in Philippians 2:15 and 1 John 3:2——but Jesus is the "only begotten son"! By removing the critical word "begotten," the N.I.V. perverts John 3:16 into a lie! The N.I.V. does the same in John 1:14, 1:18, and 3:18. (They do have about the "begotten" listed in the footnotes, but how many readers of this version are going to get the meaning of that?)
Both J.R., who informed me of these glaring differences, and I highly recommend that you compare the two versions by acquiring a parallel Bible.
Finally, by way of clarification, I started out with the N.I.V. but soon "graduated" to the K.J.V. after I got filled with the Holy Ghost many years ago. Many prefer more "modern" translations, but to me, they lose a whole lot, both in beauty and in meaning, and sad to say, in accuracy.

Today's English Lesson
Seeing the same elementary mistakes over and over again has prompted this publisher to write an English lesson each issue. Look for some of these lessons to be repeated, because the mistakes are!
Patricia from Spain sent it still another misusage, and it involves misusing "please" instead of "pleas."
As this reader states, at first she thought it could have been a typo, but it appeared twice in the same article ... inexcusable!
The context was:
"Ignoring the please from the Socialist Government ..."
And then again, "if they continue to ignore the please ..."
C'mon, people ... actually, I simply going to state that, if you do not know the difference between the plural of "plea" and the word "please," as used to preface requests, my plea is that you please learn that difference!

and Members are Making a Difference
What do you think would happen if students in your local public middle school brought home a word puzzle that, when solved, spelled out the following
"There is no Savior but Jesus Christ"?
There would be outrage from the A.C.L.U. Some angry parents would protest. There might be threats of a lawsuit. After all, no child in a public school today brings home any puzzles that exalt one religious belief over another.
Or do they?
Thanks to our growing network of local chapters and members, recently we were apprised of a series of pro-Islamic activities taking place in some California public schools. Use this link to see a word puzzle brought home by some children who attend an intermediate school in Corona, California:

Now see the following link and note that the circled letters spell out the phrase "There is no god but Allah." This is what students saw after completing the puzzle. In another instance, a California high school proclaimed "Islamic Awareness Week." But when a parent complained, the principal pulled the plug on this program.
These examples raise some very disturbing questions. Why is Islam being taught and celebrated in some of our public schools in a way that other religions, such as Christianity and Judaism, aren't? Why are songs about Islam being sung during the Islamic holiday Ramadan, while public schools routinely prohibit the singing of Christmas carols and have replaced "Christmas break" with "winter break"?
Why would a school proclaim "Islamic Awareness Week" when it is unheard of for a school to proclaim "Christian Awareness Week" or "Jewish Awareness Week"? And why is the A-C-L-U not objecting to this obvious religious preference?
One community leader put it this way: "Our public schools have been blitzed by Muslims demanding Ramadan songs to be sung in classes and requiring the schools to allow them to introduce "the benefits of Islam" hand-outs to all the students (based upon their constitutional rights and equal access)."
Such efforts demanding special treatment of Islam will succeed if we do not act. The good news is we can make a difference when we stand up against efforts in public schools to provide special treatment of Islam——and stand up we must.
That's why one of the recommended projects for A-C-T! for America chapters is to review textbooks and curricula in their local schools and take action when necessary, to ensure that Islam is not receiving special or biased treatment. Had it not been for the existence of a local A-C-T! for America chapter and several A-C-T! for America members, we might not have learned about what was going on in these California public schools!
Why? Because you won't read about incidents like these in your local paper. You won't see it on your T-V news. And as A-C-T! for America chapters are started in more and more communities, our ability to detect and expose incidents like these will increase dramatically——and with it our ability to take action!
